Salt Creep in Water Softeners: What It Is, Why It Happens and How to Deal With It

If you own a water softener, you may occasionally notice a white, crusty deposit forming around the salt compartment, lid, cabinet or nearby components. This is commonly referred to as

           salt creep

           .

Although a small amount may appear harmless, persistent salt creep shouldn't simply be ignored. Left to build up, salt deposits can prevent the salt from dropping, preventing the system from regenerating properly, it can make a softener messy, interfere with moving parts and fittings, and may indicate that salt-laden moisture or brine is reaching areas where it shouldn't.

The good news is that salt creep is usually straightforward to clean up, and there are several things you can do to reduce the chances of it returning.

           What is salt creep?

           Salt creep occurs when

salty water or moisture reaches a surface and the water evaporates, leaving salt crystals behind

           .

Once crystals begin to form, further salty moisture can travel through and around the existing deposits. Over time, a small patch can develop into a surprisingly substantial crust.

It is particularly noticeable around water softeners because the brine system contains highly concentrated salt water. Even relatively small amounts of brine, condensation or damp salt can therefore leave visible deposits once the moisture evaporates.

Salt creep shouldn't be confused with a

           salt bridge

. A salt bridge is a hardened layer of salt inside the brine compartment that can prevent salt beneath it from properly dissolving. Salt creep generally refers to salt deposits forming on surfaces around the salt/brine area.

What causes salt creep on a water softener?

There isn't always one single cause. Sometimes it's simply the result of a little salt or brine being spilt when the machine is filled. However, repeated or excessive deposits deserve closer investigation.

           Common causes include

spilt salt or brine, overfilling the salt compartment, damp conditions, splashing during regeneration, salt dust, poor-quality salt and small leaks or seepage from brine system components

           .

The type and quality of salt can also make a considerable difference. Salt containing excessive fines, dust or impurities can create more residue inside the machine than good quality water softener salt.

If you clean the deposits away and they quickly return in exactly the same place, don't continually clean the symptom.

Find out where the moisture is coming from.

Can salt creep damage a water softener?

Salt itself is obviously something a water softener is designed to use, but that doesn't mean salt deposits are desirable everywhere in the machine.

Heavy deposits can accumulate around lids, hinges, valves, fittings and other components. They can make parts difficult to operate and make routine servicing unnecessarily difficult.

Salt-laden moisture can also be particularly unfriendly to

           metal components and nearby surfaces

, potentially encouraging corrosion over time.

More importantly, substantial or recurring salt creep can be a warning sign. If brine is repeatedly reaching the outside of the brine system, there may be a leak, an excessively high brine level, an overflow problem or another issue that needs attention.

How to clean salt creep from a water softener

           Before doing anything,

follow the manufacturer's instructions for your particular water softener

. If there is any sign of an electrical problem, significant leakage or a fault involving the valve or internal components, stop and arrange professional attention.

For straightforward external salt deposits, start by removing loose crystals carefully. A soft brush, plastic scraper or vacuum can be useful. Avoid using metal tools that could scratch the cabinet or damage components.

Next, wipe the affected surfaces with a

           warm, damp cloth

. Salt is highly soluble in water, so warm water will usually remove ordinary deposits without aggressive chemicals. For stubborn mineral staining on a suitable non-sensitive surface, a manufacturer-approved cleaner may help, but don't introduce household chemicals into the brine tank unless the softener manufacturer specifically permits them.

Rinse your cloth regularly rather than simply spreading concentrated salty water over a larger area.

Once the salt has been removed,

           dry the area thoroughly

. This is important because leaving salty water behind simply allows another layer of crystals to form as it evaporates.

What if the salt creep is inside the brine compartment?

If there is a significant accumulation of dirty salt, sludge or residue inside the salt compartment, a more thorough clean may be required.

Allow the salt level to fall naturally where practical rather than throwing usable salt away. Follow the manufacturer's procedure for putting the machine into the appropriate condition for maintenance, then remove loose salt and any sludge from the bottom of the compartment.

Clean the tank using the method recommended by the manufacturer and inspect it for salt bridging, excessive sediment and unusual water levels.

Before putting the softener back into normal operation, make sure any components that were removed or disturbed are correctly refitted.

Different water softeners have different designs, so

don't dismantle valves, injectors, brine assemblies or safety floats unless you know the correct procedure for that particular machine

           .

How do you stop salt creep coming back?

Good housekeeping makes a significant difference. When topping up the softener, pour the salt carefully and wipe away anything that spills onto the cabinet or surrounding area.

           Use

good quality salt recommended for your particular water softener

. Avoid assuming that every product labelled "salt" or even "premium salt" is suitable for use in a water softener.

Don't continually fill the salt compartment beyond the manufacturer's recommended level, and periodically look inside the machine rather than simply adding another bag of salt on top.

Most importantly, keep an eye on

           where the deposits are appearing

. A little residue immediately after filling the machine is very different from a thick salt crust that repeatedly forms around the same fitting.

When should you call a water softener engineer?

A small amount of salt creep that cleans away and doesn't return is generally straightforward to manage. Professional investigation is sensible, however, if the deposits are

heavy, repeatedly return, appear around valves or pipework, are accompanied by water leakage, or the water level in the brine tank appears unusually high

           .

You should also have the softener checked if it stops producing properly softened water, begins using an unusual amount of salt, fails to regenerate correctly or displays an error.

Simply removing the salt crystals in these situations may make everything look better, but it doesn't address the underlying problem.

A little maintenance can prevent a bigger problem

Salt creep is easy to dismiss because it often begins as nothing more than a small white deposit. But your water softener should be kept clean, correctly filled and periodically inspected.

Clean deposits when you notice them, use the correct high quality salt, keep the salt compartment in good condition and investigate recurring salt creep rather than repeatedly wiping it away.

A properly maintained water softener should provide years of reliable protection against hard water and limescale, keeping an eye on something as simple as salt creep can help you spot a developing problem before it becomes an expensive one.

Buying cheap salt wont always save you money......

People invest a lot of money in purchasing a water softener and then some make the mistake of thinking that cheap salt will save them money. In the image above you can compare cheap block salt on the left against Kinetico block salt on the right. I know which one I would rather put into my machine. Dissolving the cheap salt block into a water softeners brine well has resulted in a sand residue being left over this contributing to the premature death of the block salt softener it was put into. So the hard lesson learnt by the customer was buy a quality product that you can rely on. Good quality salt will help extend the life of your investment avoiding costly repair bills or the need for a complete replacment.

A welcome to our new web site and introduction to Softener Salts with brief description of what we offer.

Welcome to our new web site and blog, here we will keep you to date with all the products we stock, pricing and new products that we will be introducing. We will also be posting some tips on how to keep your water softener in tip top condition which will hopefully prolong the life of your machine. Firstly a little bit of information about us and what we have to offer. Softener Salts Ltd is an independent family run business established in December 2017 due to a long established supplier in the area retiring after 39 years of trading. We, like them offer premium water softener salts at very competitive prices and offer a service we hope people want to use time and time again. We are conveniently located just three miles south of Cirencester and eight miles north of Swindon, half a mile off the A419 near Down Ampney. This allows us to easily service The Cotswolds, & North Wiltshire offering both collections and delivery.
